What Is a Rescue Dog?
- Equipo NUPEC®
Over the past few decades, rescue dogs have gained great prominence, and we hear more and more about these dogs and their tremendous contributions to humanity. But beyond what you may have heard, have you ever wondered what a rescue dog is, or what its job is? To help you learn more about these working dogs, we answer those questions in this NUPEC Blog article.
What is a rescue dog?
Also known as search and rescue dogs, they are trained to search for and find people (alive or deceased) in rubble, avalanches, landslides and even shipwrecks.
What work do they do?
As mentioned above, their main task is to search for and find people trapped by natural disasters, and to do so they use their sense of smell, one of the most developed and powerful senses dogs have.
Search and rescue dogs are trained from a young age, not only to find people with their nose: their training also teaches them how to act, behave and move in high-risk areas, as well as the international rescue signals.
The breeds used for this work include the Saint Bernard, German Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Dalmatian and Labrador; however, there are also mixed-breed dogs with an excellent sense of smell that are trained to search for and find people as well.
In broad terms, that is what rescue dogs are and the work they do.
We hope you found this information about rescue dogs useful. To learn more about the topic, we invite you to read Why Are Rescue Dogs So Important?, also available on our blog.
Finally, at NUPEC® we actively support the great work rescue dogs do for us. To give these heroic dogs conscious scientific nutrition that provides the energy, health and focus they need to keep up with their training and, of course, their search and rescue work, we run the Food Scholarship Program for K-SAR Group Canine Teams. This way, we make sure these noble working dogs have a high-quality, highly palatable and digestible food that nourishes their health and allows them to perform at their best.
At NUPEC®, we are committed to enhancing the health, beauty and life of pets through responsible scientific nutrition, bringing fulfillment to their owners.
