Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Adoption
- Equipo NUPEC®
Adopting a pet is a very important decision, so it is vital that anyone about to make this commitment to a companion animal's life (one that lasts the pet's entire lifetime) evaluates it carefully, weighing the responsibilities and commitments that come with a dog.
So our message, as a socially responsible company, to everyone planning to adopt a companion animal is to think this responsibility through carefully beforehand, for the sake of the pet's well-being. To help you reflect on this commitment, we have put together the most common and frequently asked questions about dog adoption. If you have ever had questions about the process, today on the NUPEC Blog we answer them.
Dog adoption FAQ
What do I need to adopt a dog?
In terms of formal requirements, an ID is usually required, so only adults can complete the process. If a child is the one encouraging the family to adopt, they need their parents' consent, and one of the parents must complete the adoption process.
You will also need to fill out a questionnaire or have an interview to determine whether you are a suitable adopter; shelters may sometimes ask for photos, videos or a visit to the pet's future home, and in some cases an adoption fee is charged. All these requirements may vary from shelter to shelter. In addition, keep in mind that adopting a dog requires the financial means to care for it and buy everyday items such as leashes, a collar, an ID tag, a bed, toys and grooming supplies.
As for the intangible requirements, the adopter must commit to the pet's full care, both physical and mental/emotional.
Where can I adopt a dog?
There are now many shelters, rescues and animal adoption centers; one option for adopting a pet is through Adopta un Mextizo.
What are the adoption fees?
Each shelter sets its own adoption fees, which are one way these organizations obtain resources to keep rescuing and caring for the dogs and cats that come into their care.
What does the adoption fee cover?
It is usually used to vaccinate, deworm and spay or neuter the dog being adopted.
How long does the adoption process take?
If you are a suitable adopter and your application is approved, it may take a couple of days while your information is reviewed, your background is checked and an interview is conducted.
Can I adopt any dog?
Yes, any of the dogs up for adoption can be adopted. If a particular dog has special physical needs or requires specific care because of its temperament, the shelter will let you know, and other factors may be taken into account to recommend a dog that suits your lifestyle.
Are there purebred dogs in shelters?
Yes. Unfortunately, abandonment through neglect or loss does not discriminate by breed and happens to all dogs, purebred or not. But we encourage you to keep an open mind, because mixed-breed dogs make pets just as good as purebreds.
If you still have questions about the adoption process or the commitment you make to a dog when you adopt, we invite you to talk to your trusted veterinarian or reach out to Adopta un Mextizo, NUPEC®'s responsible adoption program, so they can answer them.
Finally, if you already understand the great responsibility and full commitment these animals require and want to start your adoption process, you can do so here on the NUPEC® website through the Adopta un Mextizo button; in this section, you will find dogs and cats waiting to be adopted.
At NUPEC®, we are committed to enhancing the health, beauty and life of pets through responsible scientific nutrition, bringing fulfillment to their owners.
